Number 21 / December 2007:
All The Things You Thought You Knew
This was recorded live in the studio, exactly as you hear it, in late 2001. This is a
newly mastered version of the song. I did take the liberty of editing out the long,
boring, noodly keyboard solos. I kept the Rhodes solo in the middle, which was

probably
the only decent one.
Anyway, this was actually written in late 1999, making it (possibly) the oldest
song presented on this website...so far. I wrote it while I was sick with
tuberculosis, confined to the house, and listening to lots of Beatles records.
The original version was more Beatles-influenced, with me singing over a fake
sampled Mellotron. Here, it's done more atmospheric, with a Kurzweil K2000 that I
borrowed from my friend Chris. The not-so-great-sounding vocal effect was a
DOD Ice Box chorus pedal, inserted directly into the mic channel. Not that the
vocals were that great anyway...

Instruments used: Kurzweil K2000, Rhodes Stage 73, Voice.

Tumult
Late September, 2003. A tumultuous time indeed...but also a creative time. I was
in a big experimental phase here (experimenting is a good thing to do when you
have no sense of direction). I took mics outside late one night, and captured the
sounds of this factory across the street and the cars on the highway near my
house.
There's some wind courtesy of the Roland SH-3 in here, and some
digitally-mangled acoustic guitar.
The random shards of music that fade in and out
of the abyss were some ambient pieces I was working on at the time that I never
finished. The
other incidental noises were me dragging a rake around the asphalt
driveway. There were also recordings of the bathroom sinks thrown in there. If
you don't think about it too hard, and just listen...this piece does have a sort of
magic. At least I think so. But what do I know! I like weird things!

Instruments used:
Acoustic Guitar, Roland SH-3, The world around me.

Drag Along
Another piece of the same type as "The Effluvium"...100% analogue, slightly
loose and meandering. I recorded this on 1/4" tape in early 2001, and I finally
mixed it in February 2005. It's interesting because it has this slow, draggy quality
through the main part of the piece, mostly courtesy of the Casio drums, but then
it turns acoustic and very sped-up...and pretty sloppy. Sometimes I miss my fully
analogue days. It was such a rewarding way to create sound. Nowadays I'm
somewhere in between analogue and digital, depending on the project.

Instruments used: Casio CT-410V, Roland SH-3, Rhodes Stage 73, Univox Bass,
old drum kit.

Number 18 / September 2007:
The Summons
I checked the mail one day in July 2005 and found this. A summons for jury duty. I
found it to be pretty hilarious, so I made this extremely over-dramatic thing out of
it. It was fun.

Instruments used: Yamaha TX7, voice.

Number 17 / August 2007:
Mouthing Off
I did this a couple of weeks ago (as of August 2007). I was just sitting around
surfing the web, making stupid noises....and got this idea. It's a mouth funk song. I
did the bass sound
by pitch shifting my voice down an octave. The beatboxing is really compressed
too.

Instruments used: my mouth.

Number 16 / July 2007:
Five
Now for something completely different. Here's an edgy little guitar-driven jam in
5/8. I did this in July 2004. Sorry for the extremely bitey guitar tone...guess it was
mixed in a hurry!
Instruments used: DeArmond S73 electric guitar, Reason.
