Exciting New Possibilities In Sound MooT BooXLe killing time on the Lowrey Organ. The title is pretty cheeky, because there is not a whole lot of exciting hi-fidelity stuff here. I recorded this in the rehearsal room of the local theatre when I had some spare time one day, on my little handheld tape recorder. Prepare to be dazzled for 9-odd minutes while I run through every Rick Wakeman / Tony Banks cliche I can think of.
Instruments: Old Lowrey Organ...sorry, I can't remember the model.

November Under The Jail / Lady Written and recorded in the fall of 2000 on 4-track reel-to-reel. I had been listening to lots of Captain Beefheart at this point, and it certainly shows in my obtuse, angular spoken lyrics. Was a lot of fun to do. This is an early 2005 mix and mastering of the song.
Instruments: Old drum kit, Squier Stratocaster, Univox bass, voice.

Let Us Groove This was just an experiment in groove. It has too angular of a chord structure for me to write a decent pop song over it, so I left it as is. This was recorded in a tiny room in 2002. The way I got the kick drum to sound the way it does was to filter all the acoustic drum frequencies below 200Hz and add a 909 kick drum loop underneath.
Flarp Another instrumental jam that never saw the light of day. It begins with little chintzy percussion provided by Mr. Casio, until the real drums come in and drive it all the way to your auntie's and back! Melody for this song was inspired by / stolen from Rick Laird's solo in Mahavishnu Orchestra's "One Word". Recorded in late 2002.
Reddish A fairly hard rock instrumental which was inspired somewhat by mid-70's King Crimson. I recorded this, I believe, in late 2001 or early 2002, so I would have been 18 years old. The piece fluctuates between nicely executed sections and very weak bits that almost fall apart. I really didn't like to rehearse things very well back then, and it shows...but it is an enjoyable look into a developmental stage in the music of MooT BooXLe.
Instruments: DeArmond S73 electric guitar, Univox bass, Rogers Drumkit.

Can You? One of my first songs to combine loops, electronic elements, and sound effects with live instruments and vocals. The drum track was played live, then every variation and fill was cut up into separate loops. The whole of this experimental track was recorded using ACID 2.0 in July 2001.
Instruments: Rogers drums, Univox bass, Voice, Squier Stratocaster guitar, Roland SH-3, Ensoniq ESQ-1, found sounds

The Effluvium A progressive rock / jazz fusion instrumental comprovisation that I recorded on reel-to-reel Tascam 34 4-track in December 2000 at the age of 17. This is a good example of the type of music that I used to make by improvising part after part. I worked from memory, using no charts, and perhaps I should have, because many of these early improvisations have a loose, almost indecisive feel.
Instruments: Fender Rhodes Stage 73, Roland SH-3, old drum kit
